A hair test on short notice is stressful, but you are not out of options. The most useful thing you can do is understand what the lab looks at, build a plan around the days you have, and use a method made for hair. A standard hair test looks back about 90 days, so the plan starts with the hair on your head and a clear routine you can follow from today until collection.
This guide walks through how the test works, what to do with one day, three days or a week, how to handle collection day, and what your rights are if a result looks wrong. We sell hair detox products, so we also explain where our Macujo Aloe Rid Shampoo fits.
TL;DR
- A standard hair test uses about the first 1.5 inches of hair from the scalp, which represents roughly 90 days of history.
- Results usually come back within 1 to 3 business days of the lab receiving your sample, so there is no long wait once you test.
- With little time, a consistent wash routine matters more than anything improvised the night before.
- Our Macujo Aloe Rid Shampoo is built around the Macujo method, the routine we recommend for hair follicle tests.
- If you think a result is wrong, you can ask for a retest and talk to the Medical Review Officer (MRO).

How a hair test works and why timing matters
A hair drug test checks for drugs and their metabolites that have entered the hair as it grows. Substances travel through the bloodstream to the follicle and become part of the strand. According to Quest Diagnostics, the lab uses the first 3.9 cm (1.5 inches) of head hair closest to the scalp, and that length covers approximately 90 days and shows a pattern of repeated use.
Head hair grows an average of about half an inch per month, which is where the 90-day figure comes from. Newly used substances do not appear in the part of the hair the lab cuts right away. Traces may be seen within about a week of use, since hair needs time to grow out of the scalp.
This is why a last-minute plan is different from a urine test plan. You are working with the hair itself, so your steps focus on the hair shaft and on how you wash it. For a deeper look, our hair drug test detection window guide covers the timeline in more detail, and how drugs get into the hair shaft explains the biology.

What the lab actually collects
The collector cuts a small sample close to the scalp, usually from the back of the head, and sends it to the lab. The sample is typically about the width of a pencil. You do not need much hair, but the collector does need enough to reach the lab’s minimum.

Short hair, shaved heads and body hair
A lot of people ask whether cutting their hair solves the problem. It usually does not. When there is not enough scalp hair, labs can use body hair instead. Slower-growing body hair, such as underarm hair, can extend the detection window up to a year. Our page on why a shaved head hair test still detects drugs explains what collectors do in that case. If you have dreadlocks, see what labs test with dreadlocks.
Your plan by time available
The time you have decides what is realistic. Here is how we think about each window.
| Time before collection | What to focus on |
|---|---|
| Under 24 hours | Wash the hair thoroughly with a hair-specific routine, avoid new exposure, plan collection day |
| 2 to 3 days | Follow a repeated wash routine, keep hair free of smoke and fresh contact |
| 4 to 7 days | Complete a full routine and prepare logistics, including medications and paperwork |
| 10 to 14 days | Use the full Macujo method timing |
One day or less
With under a day, the plan is simple and calm. Wash with a product designed for hair tests, follow the label instructions carefully, and do not add new sources of exposure. Stay out of rooms where people are smoking, since hair can pick up substances from the environment, including smoke. Our guide on environmental exposure and hair tests and how external contamination affects results shows what to avoid.
Also handle the practical side the same day: confirm where and when you need to test, bring photo ID, and know the name of any medication you take.
Two to three days
With a few days you can repeat your wash routine instead of relying on a single wash. Consistency is the point. Use the same product the same way each time, and read the full directions before the first wash so nothing is rushed. Our hair detox checklist lays out the steps in order so you can tick them off.
A week or more
A week gives you room to finish a complete routine and still have a buffer. It also leaves time to order, receive and read instructions without stress. If you are somewhere between a week and two weeks, you are close to the window the Macujo method is built for, covered in our 10 to 14 day Macujo Aloe Rid instructions.
The Macujo method on a short timeline
The Macujo method, created by Mike Macujo, is the routine we recommend as the best method for a hair follicle drug test. It combines a specific wash routine with a shampoo made for it. Our Macujo Aloe Rid Shampoo is designed for that routine, and we describe its role as part of the method, not as a magic one-step fix.
What we like about the method is that it is clear. You know when to wash, how long to leave the product on, and how to prepare your hair beforehand. That structure matters most when you are anxious and short on time, because a plan removes guesswork. If you want the method steps, our Macujo Aloe Rid instructions and timing page explains safety and sequence, and our page on the Macujo method without Aloe Rid covers the routine itself.
If you want to see the product, Macujo Aloe Rid Shampoo is the one we put at the center of the method. For a stacked approach, there is also a Macujo Aloe Rid Shampoo and Zydot Ultra Clean bundle.
What about bleaching and dyeing?
Some people consider bleaching or coloring at the last minute. Research shows these treatments can change drug concentrations in hair, and labs know that. Treated hair can also be hard to tell apart from deliberate manipulation, as a 2023 review in the clinical literature notes. Damaged or unusual hair can draw attention at collection. Before you decide, read our guide to the role of bleach in hair testing.
Our perspective
We hear from people every day who found out about a hair test with very little notice. The first message is nearly always the same: is it too late?
Our view is that the best use of short notice is a clear, repeatable routine. That is why we built our store around the Macujo method and the Macujo Aloe Rid Shampoo. It gives you steps to follow, and it keeps you from stacking random tricks from forums that can damage your hair or leave you more worried than before.
We also think privacy and support matter as much as the product. Our customer service is available from 9am to midnight every day, and we focus on confidential, secure delivery, because a last-minute test is not the moment to be waiting on an answer. If you need help choosing between our hair, saliva and urine options, we are glad to guide you.

Collection day: what to expect
On the day, expect a short visit. You will show ID, the collector will confirm the substances being tested, and a small sample is cut from near the scalp. The sample is sealed and sent to the lab, and you sign the paperwork.
A few practical points help the day go smoothly:
- Arrive on time with a valid photo ID and your testing instructions.
- Tell the collector about any prescription medication. Hair results can be affected by dose, the specific molecule and individual metabolism, so a prescription matters when a result is reviewed.
- Keep your hair as it normally is. Do not arrive with a fresh cut, new product or unusual styling that looks out of place.
- Ask for a copy of any forms you sign.
If your test is a Department of Transportation test, rules differ from a regular employer test. Our DOT hair test page explains how those tests are handled for U.S. workers.
How long results take
Once the lab receives your sample, results are generally available within 1 to 3 business days, and a result that needs confirmation can take up to 5 business days. Negative results are typically released within 24 hours of the lab receiving the sample, while other specimens need extra time for confirmatory testing.
That means the clock after collection is short. Your preparation has to be finished before you walk in, not after.
Why same-day clinics do not change your preparation
Many clinics advertise same-day or walk-in hair testing. The collection can happen the same day, and some labs report within a day or two. Quick access to a test is not the same as quick preparation, so plan around the day you will actually be collected.
If you think a result is wrong
Hair testing is not perfect. Screening positives need confirmation, and hair concentrations can be affected by drug quantity, sweat, melanin, bleaching and coloring. A 2020 review notes that false positives and false negatives can occur because of metabolic differences and a lack of standardization in analysis. And a 2025 review points out that drug concentrations in hair do not track closely with the dose taken.
If you believe your result is inaccurate, these are the steps:
- Ask your employer for a retest right away.
- Contact the MRO with questions and give them details of any prescribed medication.
- For a DOT test, know that for an invalid result the MRO must ask about medications and decide whether there is an acceptable medical explanation.

Build a routine you can trust
The best last-minute plan has four parts: know your timeline, use one product designed for hair, avoid new exposure, and handle the paperwork. Our hair drug test information page and hair follicle drug testing overview cover the basics if you want to read more. If your concern is marijuana specifically, see our page on the hair follicle drug test for marijuana. If your test is for a job, our 90-day THC hair detox guide for job applicants is written for that situation.
For the pass-focused view, how to pass a hair follicle drug test walks through the full process.

FAQ
Can I really prepare for a hair test at the last minute?
Yes, you can make a plan. Hair tests look back about 90 days, so what you do now is about your wash routine, avoiding new exposure and getting the logistics right. Our Macujo method and shampoo give you a defined routine to follow.
How long does a hair test take?
Collection takes only a few minutes. After the lab receives the sample, results usually arrive within 1 to 3 business days, and confirmation of a non-negative result can take up to 5 business days.
Will one use of a drug show up on a hair test?
It depends on the dose, the substance, the lab’s sensitivity and your own metabolism, according to Labcorp. If a prescription such as Adderall is involved, tell the collector and the MRO before the result is reviewed.
Does shaving my head help?
Not reliably. If scalp hair is not available, labs can collect body hair, and body hair can reflect a longer period. See our shaved head hair test page for details.
What should I do if I think the result is wrong?
Request a retest from your employer and contact the MRO, giving them any prescription details. Keep copies of your paperwork and ask about the lab’s confirmation process.
